VIRGIN REMY TEST
Take the FLawLESS VIRGIN TEST today!
There are 6 standard checks to determine if the hair you purchased is virgin:
Feel the Cuticles*
If you hold one strand of hair at the top near the weft/tracks between your index finger and thumb, and slide your hand down the entire length of the hair, the hair should feel smooth – you are going in the direction of the cuticle. However, if you then reverse the direction, slide your hand up the hair strand you will feel that the hair is more ridged – this is the cuticle on the hair. If the hair is smooth both ways, this means that the cuticles were stripped by an acid wash.
Lighter Ends
The ends of the hair will generally be lighter than the roots (hair at the tracks). This is more prominent in Indian Remy Virgin hair, because most women work outside in India and due to the high temperatures and the strength of the sun, the sun bleaches the hair over time. Therefore, hair that is older (at the bottom) will always be lighter because of the bleaching from the sunlight. This won’t be as common in hair from South East Asia and China where the sun is not as strong.
Length of mustache or beard at the weft
If you observe the weft, you will see that there is a mustache or beard. This is the hair that has been stitched to the track and reversed so that the hair does not shed. Just the nature of the hair flipping over means that the hair will be inverted, therefore the mustache/beard must be very short to avoid tangling. If the mustache or beard is long, the cuticles will catch on the long flowing hair and there will be tangling. If you do see longer than 1/2 “ mustache, this means that the manufacturer believes there will be no tangling because the cuticles have been stripped with acid. Therefore, there is no need to have a short beard/mustache. It’s an extra expense most manufacturers will not incur.
Split Ends
There must be split ends at the ends of the hair. All virgin hair will have some split ends if not many. If the hair does not have split ends, this means the hair has been acid washed and the cuticles have been stripped.
Silicone
If you feel the hair and it has a shiny residue on it then the hair has been coated with silicone to allow for stripped cuticles to slide smoothly. True Remy Virgin hair does not require this and nor is it manufactured with this extra coating.
Smell
If the hair has a corn-chip smell then it is processed. This is the smell of the acid used to strip the cuticle.
*Cuticle Free hair is non remy human hair from India that is imported to China, acid washed, wefted (and permed if required), then finished with a silicone bath. This hair is what is currently sold as Virgin hair in the world. The reason why people do not know it is not Remy human hair is because the hair can by dyed by the end-user and can be washed more than 10 times before the silicone is removed and the hair dries out and begins to tangle.
